Mayo Camp, Sudan

Mayo refugeecamp, Khartoum, Sudan. After the independence in 1956, the country has suffered from a 22-year long civil war that nearly destroyed the country and a large part of the population lack access to healthcare. The country has 35 million people and 4 million internally displaced people, of whom 2.6 million have lived near the capital of Khartoum. One of the camps is Mayo Camp, 20-45 km from Khartoum center with about 450 000 refugees. The health problems in the camp are severe: infectious diseases, women who die in childbirth, childhood diseases, tuberculosis and HIV infections. Läkarmission’s efforts target the Mayo camp refugees and the people around the camp. The goal is to improve the health of the refugees through access to a health center.
